Phases of play

Understanding the game as consisting of four phases: reset, defence, trigger and attack/cover
Most players won't think about it, but the game can be split into 4 phases. Once we have served the ball we wait in a RESET position while the ball is arriving at the opposition's setter. The aim is to be ready to move in DEFENCE positions to cover the attack. The precise positions will depend on where the attack is coming from. Once we have stopped the attack hitting the floor we need to get our players ready to attack (TRIGGER) with the ball at the setter. As the ball leaves the setter we move into ATTACK, with non-hitting players moving to cover the attacker. Consequently for each point we continually move between four locations: RESET, DEFENCE, TRIGGER, ATTACK and then back to RESET.
