How to do the volley

The volley is the simplest shot to learn but requires skill and speed to do accurately as a setter.
The key to a good volley is getting the forehead under the ball quickly with the hips square to the direction you want to set. The ball should be coming down to land on your forehead so you need great footowork to get under the ball as early as possible with hips and hands set before the ball arrives. Your arms form a basket with thumbs pointing to each other and forming a triangle with your index fingers. The ball should come into this basket touching all the fingers to slow the ball down. The arms and the shoulders act like a gymnast's springboard absorbing the balls energy then bouncing it out again like elastic in a smooth single motion. You want as much time under the ball as possible so speed is essential to get into the proper body position. The more time you have the more chance you have of seeing the blocker to your right, your hitters to your left and then to make the perfect unreadable pass to help your attackers.
